Small exercise trainers under the desk

Footrests can contribute to an ergonomic sitting position at high desks, especially for smaller people. They are recommended by doctors and health insurance companies if the optimal sitting posture cannot be achieved without help.

Footrests - who are they important for?

Basically, footrests for the office are mainly relevant for smaller people. This always applies if the desk or office chair is not continuously adjustable in height. If the person sitting cannot achieve at least a 90° angle between the upper and lower legs and place their feet flat on the floor, the legs are not adequately supported. Blood circulation is then restricted, which often results in the legs “falling asleep”, starting to tingle or even swelling. This can lead to long-term health problems such as venous disease or varicose veins. In such a situation, a footrest is used to relieve the legs and indirectly also the back and neck.
So pay attention to correct posture, especially when working from home. As is often assumed, not only an upright back posture contributes to this, but also the correct position of the legs, arms, head and neck. It's even worth paying attention to your wrists. These should not be permanently angled, but should rest relaxed on the desk or on a shelf in front of the keyboard.

For people with a height of 170cm or more, footrests are usually not necessary, at least for ergonomically correct sitting. Nevertheless, they can also be comfortable for taller people to keep the ankles mobile and to change the position of the legs regularly. This supports so-called “active sitting”. In addition, footrests with a nubby surface can easily massage the undersides of the feet while sitting, which in turn promotes good blood circulation.

What requirements does a good footrest have to meet?

  • It should be adjustable in both height and inclination.
  • The size should be at least 45 x 35 cm (width x depth) in order to provide the feet with enough walking space and freedom of movement.
  • Ease of use saves unnecessary frustration.
  • Stability is important to give you a sense of security. Non-slip legs contribute to this.
  • A non-slip surface increases comfort.
  • If the footrest is used with street shoes, an easy-to-clean surface material is also important.

How do I adjust the footrest correctly?

It is important that the office chair and, if possible, the height of the desk are adjusted correctly. You can find detailed instructions here:

The correct height of the tread surface of your footrest is when your upper and lower legs are at an angle of at least 90°. The angle is then adjusted according to feel so that there is noticeable relief for the calves and shins. Both feet should now rest comfortably next to each other on the platform and your legs should feel very relaxed.
But remember that the feet do not remain rigid in this position. Stand up regularly, stretch your legs, or rotate your ankles while sitting, as our bodies are generally not designed to stay in the same position for hours. Movement is the be-all and end-all, even while sitting.
