Choosing the right gas pressure spring
A gas pressure spring is certainly less of a desk accessory, but it is still inevitably part of the office swivel chair or office chairs in general, regardless of whether it is a conference chair or premium executive chair. The gas spring fulfills a mostly overlooked but nevertheless important task. As a centerpiece, it not only connects the office chair base with the seat, but also allows the ergonomic sitting to be adjusted to the perfect and personal needs, so that nothing stands in the way of a long, constructive working day.
What types of gas springs are there?
If you take a closer look at the topic of gas springs, you will inevitably notice that this component is used in many variations for a wide variety of purposes. In the car, on the tailgate, in the kitchen drawer, on the height-adjustable slatted frame, to name just a few places. At this point we will focus on the office swivel chair. As a desk accessory, the gas pressure spring is also available to purchase as a spare part.
We divide the gas pressure spring as a spare part into the following sizes, each with a black cylinder or made of chrome-plated steel:

How does a gas spring work?
There is a so-called pressure tube in the outer area of the gas spring. This is the visible outer cylinder.
As with an internal combustion engine, the piston rod is located in the cylinder. The inside of the gas pressure spring is filled with gas.
The name compression spring is based on the fact that the nitrogen gas is pressed into the cylinder with enormous pressure. Different types of pressure are required for different locations, but it can be said that the more pressure is pressed into a cylinder during production, the higher the thrust of the spring.
The gas spring is usually triggered via a mechanism. To do this, a small valve is pressed in at the end of the piston rod. This causes the piston rod to slide out of the cylinder and begin to perform its function.

The gas pressure springs used by hjh OFFICE are TÜV LGA type tested according to DIN 4550 (an engraving can be found in the piston).
Why is the gas spring on the piston smeared with oil?
A little oil was added to the inside of the gas spring, which provides gentle and additional cushioning. In addition, the seal remains supple thanks to the oil, so the piston rod can serve its purpose for many years without gas escaping from the cylinder.
When do I have to replace the gas pressure spring?
- In case of pressure loss as a spare part
- Due to personal needs
Basically, the gas pressure spring is a long-lasting component.
In rare cases, a small amount of gas escapes through the seal, which can lead to a loss of pressure. The gas spring then drops automatically and can no longer be fixed in height. In this case a new gas spring is required.
Another option could be to replace the office swivel chair, i.e. if there are large differences in the weight of the users. Gas struts for desk chairs are usually designed so that the average person can find enough space and achieve an optimal sitting position.
How do I replace a gas pressure spring?

Please note that the gas spring must under no circumstances be opened by force. If you have any difficulties with the replacement, we recommend that you visit an authorized specialist dealer and have the replacement carried out. However, you can usually remove the gas spring yourself quite easily and without any problems.

How do I find the right gas spring for my office swivel chair?

When selecting, please pay attention to the correct diameter and ideally use your old gas spring as a reference. For an optimal measurement result, we recommend measuring the old gas spring with a caliper.
How do I release the gas spring? Important note - the cap!
Last but not least, we would like to point out a very important fact when installing the gas spring. It doesn't matter whether you are replacing the gas pressure damper or just reinstalling it on your office chair.
There is a small plastic part embedded at the end of the piston (thinner upper part of the gas spring). This is the valve that is pressed in by the mechanism to trigger the function of the spring.
In some cases, another small plastic cap is attached to protect the valve. This protective cap must be removed before use, otherwise the mechanism cannot be activated by lightly pressing it.
