Good home office chairs are ergonomic
If you sit for a long time, you can quickly become tense. This is especially true when you are busy with work and don't pay attention to your posture. Thanks to their ingenious shape, high-quality and ergonomic home office chairs help you maintain a health-promoting sitting position, even when you're not thinking about it. The best office chairs for home offices have one thing in common: they offer a variety of adjustment options to adapt exactly to your needs. We would like to explain to you below what is important.
You should pay attention to these features when purchasing a home office office chair
Seat
- The seat should be large enough to allow dynamic sitting.
- The seat should be at least 43cm wide and 38cm deep. Larger chairs are always recommended, as long as there is about a hand's width of space between the backs of your knees when sitting, while you can still lean comfortably.
Continuous height adjustment of the seat is essential.
Backrest
- The backrest should definitely have a tilt function.
- The counter pressure when tilted should adapt to your body weight.
- Lumbar support should definitely be present.
- The lumbar support should be adjustable in both height and depth.
Headrest
- Height adjustment is mandatory.
- An inclination adjustment is highly recommended.
Padding
- The padding should be made of non-slip and breathable material.
- The cover should be neither particularly hard nor particularly soft. A medium size promotes the distribution of pressure on your legs and thus healthy blood circulation.
- The front edge of the seat should be rounded.
Armrests
- Armrests help to relieve the strain on shoulders and arms and are recommended in almost all cases. If you know from your own experience that you can easily get along without them for a long time, you can leave them out for greater freedom of movement. If you are unsure, we recommend a model with armrests.
- Height adjustment is again mandatory.
- The side distances should also be adjustable.
- An inclination adjustment is highly recommended.
- A folding function is desirable, but not absolutely necessary.
Features
- When you move, the position of the seat as well as the back and armrests should coordinate with each other, also known as “synchronous mechanics”.
- The chair should be able to rotate freely through 360°.
- At best, the seat uses 3D mechanics, meaning it can be tilted slightly in all directions.
- A reclining function is practical if you spend a lot of time at your workplace. It may seem superfluous at first glance, but it offers a huge bonus in comfort that you will never want to miss again.
The best ergonomic chairs meet all of these points and optimally help to proactively reduce back pain and tension. They allow you to sit comfortably for a long time, which has a positive effect on your productivity. We will tell you in our guide how exactly you can optimally adjust your home office chair: Adjust the office chair optimally
Home office desk chair with or without wheels?
This question is simply clarified. In order to sit healthily, a lot of exercise is important. Therefore, it is always advisable to use a home office chair with wheels to support you in your activities.
The choice of wheels depends on your floor. Soft floors such as carpet require “soft floor rolls”. They are rather hard so that they roll better on the yielding ground. With hard floors such as parquet the situation is exactly the opposite. Then you need “hard floor casters”. They are rubberized and particularly soft. This reduces rolling noise and they are less likely to leave scratches on sensitive surfaces.
Deduct home office chair from tax
Normally, your employer is not obliged to provide you with an office chair for your home office. This would only be the case if he required you to work from home. If it is a requirement of the state, for example due to a certain pandemic, then again it is not your employer who has to pay for it. But there is a way you can save money. As an employee, you can deduct your office chair as a “business-related expense” or as an “extraordinary burden”, e.g. after an accident or to prevent a herniated disc. “Advertising costs” have nothing to do with advertising, but rather with purchases that you need for your “employment”.
Are you entitled to reimbursement of costs?
Up to €1,305 will be covered by the German pension insurance, provided you have certified a health impairment that makes such a purchase absolutely necessary and have been insured for a long enough period. This is normally 15 years, or 5 years after a healing procedure. If these requirements are met, the purchase must be discussed with your employer and the pension insurance company, including obtaining a cost estimate.
If this route is not possible, there is also the option through your health insurance company. She is not obliged to contribute a subsidy, but is interested in maintaining your health. An ergonomic home office chair is ultimately cheaper than treating back problems with the associated examinations, rehabilitation measures and sick pay. Speak to your health insurance company or find out online on the relevant website what your health insurance company supports.
