All about the base base

The base is an essential part of the office chair. There are a few things to consider if you want to replace the base, replace the casters or replace the gas pressure spring. We will give you tips on how to complete these tasks easily.

Mount the base

Normally, an office chair is delivered disassembled into its three main components. In most cases, the rollers are already in the base - if not, they must be inserted into the designated holders with slight pressure. We give you 2 variants to assemble the base in no time.

1st variant

• Protect floor or materials with a large towel or blanket
• Place the seat element so that you have access to the underside
• Insert the gas spring with the thick end facing down into the recess in the middle of the axle
• Lift the assembled base part of the office chair and insert it into the holder on the underside of the seat
• When the top of the gas pressure spring is at the stop, press it slightly
• Set up the chair and you're done!

2nd variant

• Protect floor or materials with a large towel or blanket
• Place the seat element backwards, i.e. on the long back of the backrest
• Insert the gas pressure spring into the axis of the base
• Fix the turnstile rollers
• Lift the seat element and carefully place it on the gas pressure spring
• Make sure the valve clicks into place
• Turn the seat element carefully and ensure that it runs smoothly

Important!
As with all repairs, assembly and dismantling, the following applies here: safety comes first. Never use brute force, heavy tools or sharp objects that could damage your office chair. Do not attempt to disassemble the gas strut - this component is under enormous pressure and can cause serious injury if opened.

Basically, the roles of a quality chair can be easily replaced. When ordering the rollers, you should pay close attention to the diameter of the pins with which the rollers are inserted into the turnstile: 10 or 11 millimeters are common. Once the right chair castors have been found, the replacement can begin.

1st variant

• Remove gas pressure spring
• Lift the turnstile and pull the rollers firmly with your free hand
  (To avoid injury, always pull away from your body)
• The pins on the chair castors should come loose with a short, strong tug
• Check whether all plug connections are free of dirt and clean if necessary
• Press the rollers one after the other into the mounting holes until they click into place

2nd variant

• Protect the floor from damage with a blanket
• Place the removed turnstile “on its back”.
• Use your body as a counterweight, fix the turnstile on the floor with your foot on the axle
• Use one or both hands to pull the rollers out of the turnstile
• Make sure your back is straight
• Check whether all plug connections are free of dirt and clean if necessary
• Press the rollers one after the other into the mounting holes until they click into place

With a little luck and manual skills, the gas pressure spring can be repaired - easily with a universal spray or cleaner that contains lubricating and care substances. While the ball valve is being sprayed again and again, the adjusting lever should be operated again and again so that the sprayed liquid can reach the ball closure of the valve as everywhere as possible. If this application does not help even after repeated short periods of exposure, the chair spring must be replaced. This is not a problem at all with high-quality office chairs. We will show you two options for dismantling the gas pressure spring.

1st variant

• Lay the office chair so that the turnstile faces upwards
• Check whether the turnstile is screwed to the gas strut - which can be the case in rare cases
• Use a rubber mallet to carefully hit the bottom end of the cylinder (usually made of hard plastic or metal).
• Use your free hand to shake the turnstile leg far outside
• The turnstile loosens and can be removed after a few hits
• Hold the gas strut with one hand and gently but firmly tap the underside of the seat near the shock absorber with the rubber mallet
• The gas pressure spring comes loose and can be pulled off
• The chair is now dismantled into its components

2nd variant

• Raise the chair on the left and right of the seat approx. 10 to 15 centimeters
• The goal is to shake out the turnstile and its spring
• Make sure it can fall straight down to avoid damage to the rollers
• Shake the chair vigorously – pay attention to your feet
• As soon as the turnstile has fallen out, lift it to the side and knock out the gas spring with a rubber mallet
• The chair is now dismantled into its individual parts

Important
When removing it, under no circumstances use brute force or try to open the gas spring. The component is under immense pressure and the piston in particular can cause serious injuries if the cylinder is opened. If in doubt, please contact the manufacturer of your office chair.
