The padding protects against uncomfortable pressure points even when sitting for longer periods, while the tilt function prevents rigid sitting that can lead to back pain and tension.

The ideal seat height is set when your feet can rest flat on the floor and your upper and lower legs form a 90-degree angle. It is also ideal if the seat depth can be adjusted, allowing you to adapt the seat to the length of your thighs. This prevents the front edge of the seat from pressing into the backs of your knees and impairing blood circulation in your legs. A rounded seat edge is particularly comfortable!

BASE WITH CASTORS

Modern office chairs are fitted with a five-star base with five castors. These can move in all directions, allowing the chair to roll freely. If you have a hard floor, choose soft castors; hard castors are used on carpets or other soft flooring, for example. The castors should have a diameter of up to 65 mm for thick carpets and uneven floors; otherwise, 55 mm is sufficient.

BACKREST

The backrest should be angle-adjustable so that it can be optimally adapted to your back. An S-shaped backrest is particularly comfortable because it relieves pressure on the lumbar spine and helps prevent back pain when sitting for long periods. However, the padding in the lumbar area must be adjusted correctly, otherwise you may feel uncomfortable pressure. Further readjustments are often needed here once you have been using the chair for a longer time. This clearly shows just how essential adjustability is, because if the lumbar area is not supported properly, even the best office chair will no longer deliver real comfort.

PADDING

An executive chair in black leather or in other colours such as cream, beige or brown may have more or less thick padding. Your personal preferences play a role when choosing the padding – recommendations can only go so far. While some people prefer a firmer seating feel, others would rather opt for thick, soft padding. Armrests and a headrest are, of course, primarily there to provide support, but they also help give the chair a more prestigious appearance. Both parts should be height-adjustable so that the seat is truly comfortable and helps you maintain good posture. Ideally, they should be adjustable in several stages. There should be a 90-degree angle between the upper arm and forearm. The function of the armrests is to support the weight of the arms, relieving the shoulder girdle and upper back. Your intervertebral discs will thank you too if your arms do not always have to be held up freely!

THE MATERIAL

Leather is always recommended as the material for an executive chair, because it scores highly in many ways. On the one hand, it looks very elegant and emphasises the prestigious character of the office furniture. This effect is enhanced even further by black leather, as the colour black (which is not actually a colour at all) is generally considered classic and elegant, even luxurious. Whether you opt for genuine leather or faux leather is entirely up to you – both are easy to care for, although genuine leather is far higher quality, but also less affordable. However, an executive chair is not a piece of furniture that is bought at regular intervals, so “affordable” should always be balanced appropriately with good quality. Of course, textile fabrics are also conceivable for the chair upholstery, but these are often difficult to clean and stains usually remain forever.
